Menstrual Health: A Right for Deaf Women!

By Blessing Chaipa | Director

As part of its ongoing initiative to improve menstrual hygiene in the deaf community, Nzeve continues to enhance its capacity to provide information to deaf girls and women, promoting their well-being. Nzeve recognizes that deaf women in Zimbabwe require more education on menstrual hygiene to bridge the knowledge gap because they continue to face significant challenges in managing their menstrual health.

Nzeve has resolved that whenever it implements activities involving deaf women and girls, hygiene packs, including menstrual supplies, will be distributed. Along with these packs, they receive essential information on how to use the hygiene products. This initiative aims to empower them and emphasize their importance.

In November, 15 girls from Honde Valley, Rusape, Mutare Urban, and Chipinge received hygiene packs and information on menstrual hygiene during the Women Against Violence through Empowerment training. The women were being trained in various business skills, and as part of the workshop, they were also empowered with menstrual hygiene information. One participant at the camp mentioned that she had never used pads before and had been resorting to using old t-shirts. The hygiene pack provided to her was a lifesaver, as she was struggling to manage her menstrual health.

Nzeve understands the critical need for menstrual health education within the deaf community and is committed to ensuring that deaf women and girls receive both the necessary information and resources related to menstrual hygiene. While the organization’s work is commendable, the support from donors has been the backbone of its achievement
