Expanding Weekly Meals to Daily Meals for Students

By Huzaifa Kermani | Chief Marketing Officer (CMO)

Executive Summary

The NUR Food Bank, a cornerstone of the NUR Community Outreach Program (NCOP) since 1985, addresses childhood hunger among students at NUR Foundation Schools in Pakistan. Currently providing weekly meals, the project seeks to expand to daily meals to combat acute food insecurity and improve educational outcomes. Despite serving vulnerable children for 11 years, limited funding restricts meal frequency. This initiative aims to transform the lives of students by ensuring consistent nutrition, directly tackling Pakistan’s high hunger index (ranked 99th of 121 countries in the 2023 Global Hunger Index).

Project Overview

  • Mission: Alleviate poverty through education, health, and economic development.

  • Initiative: Launched in 1985, NCOP established the NUR Food Bank to provide weekly meals to all students at NUR Foundation Schools.

  • Goal: Transition from weekly to daily meals to address hunger barriers to learning.

The Challenge

  • Poverty Context: Students come from households where parents cannot afford basic necessities, including food.

  • Educational Impact: Hunger undermines concentration, attendance, and academic performance.

  • Current Limitation: Weekly meals are insufficient to meet nutritional needs, with daily meals hindered by a $53,091 funding gap.

The Solution

Provide daily nutritious meals to students, enabling them to:

  • Focus on studies without hunger distractions.

  • Improve school attendance and health outcomes.

  • Break the cycle of poverty through sustained education.

Progress to Date

  • 11 Years of Service: Weekly meals consistently delivered to all NUR Foundation School students.

  • Community Trust: 121 donors and 1 fundraiser have contributed $20,909 to date.

  • Recognition: A proven model for integrating nutrition and education in low-resource settings.

Long-Term Impact

  • Reduce Hunger: Lower Pakistan’s hunger score by improving child nutrition.

  • Socioeconomic Growth: Empower educated, healthier youth to drive future economic progress.

  • Sustainable Change: Model scalable solutions for food insecurity in low-income schools.

Call to Action

  • $50: Feeds a child for one month.

  • $250: Supports kitchen upgrades for safer meal preparation.

  • Monthly Giving: Sustain long-term impact with recurring donations.

Join 121 donors to help close the $53,091 gap and make daily meals a reality!
