Thank you to our supporters!

By Kady Cox | Executive Director

Thank you for supporting our students thus far!

During the year of 2020, Raising Awareness with Students travelled to Washington D.C. partnering with NAACP and nearby Rotary Clubs to give away PPE carekits to the thousands of attendees from all over for the March on Washington – but to also advocate that racism is a public health crisis which has recently (and finally) been declared by the director of Center for Disease Control as such; read more here: https://www.npr.org/2021/04/08/985524494/cdc-director-declares-racism-a-serious-public-health-threat.

RAWS has also hosted numerous events in Detroit regarding COVID-19 for carekits, vaccinations and other educational efforts to benefit the community. RAWS has made over 800 PPE carekits and provided over hundreds of vaccination information. We have been able to discuss how race and underlying conditions contribute to the negative aspects of COVID-19 including mental health and diabetes through which we took direct action to combat both.

In July 2020, our team took a mental health retreat to discuss how to improve our community and each other through leadership skills and training. This effort motivated the team to push through COVID/mental health related problems and channel that energy back into our community.

In November 2020, we hosted our 6th annual Diabetes Event which was virtual due to COVID-19. In this event, we discussed how lack of access to quality food affects our community and kids even more so during COVID and practiced healthier eating options through portion control. Since then, RAWS has teamed up to place healthy vending machines in the Detroit area (specifically heavily Black populated) to help generate funding for our student-led programs.

Our next upcoming trip will be to Kansas in conjunction with our partners in Chicago, Lost Boyz, Inc. We hope you can join in to support us again whether it be finacially, in-kind, or other ways to donate or support.
