An update on your donation to the Malaysia Flood Relief Fund

Thank you—we can’t say it enough! Because of your generosity, people struggling after the recent destructive floods across Malaysia were able to rebuild and receive holistic support from several local nonprofits that they know and trust.

Your donation to the Malaysia Flood Relief Fund powered four grants to local and community-led groups at the forefront of responding to this crisis. Here is a snapshot of some of the work that your generosity has supported:

  • Malaysia Relief Agency Foundation (MRA) mobilized state-wide emergency relief missions to distribute goods like hygiene kits, bedding, and food to impacted families. The organization continues to leverage its community ties as it works with corporate donors and volunteers to channel funding and resources to where it is needed most.
  • Malaysia Red Crescent Society (MRCS) has worked hand-in-hand with relevant government authorities to evacuate more than 50,000 people and provide essential relief items to flood survivors like rice, dry noodles, milk powder, dignity kits, detergent and more. Critically, the organization has focused on reaching remote and hard to access areas. It is also focused on responding to overlooked needs—like saving farm animals and pets.
  • Malaysia Medical Relief Society (MERCY Malaysia) has been providing emergency relief across multiple impacted areas in Malaysia in the form of ready-to-eat meals, drinking water and hygiene kits. It is also aiding families whose homes need debris cleared and to be rebuilt. The organization remains focused on supporting communities that were originally inaccessible due to remaining flood waters.
  • Teach for Malaysia is partnering with MERCY Malaysia, the Malaysian Red Crescent Society, and Solidariti Pendidikan to support teachers and students that were affected by the flooding. The organization is ensuring gaps in child learning are reduced, damaged schools are repaired and rebuilt and additional tutoring services are available for those impacted by the flooding.

This fund is no longer accepting donations, and this will be the last fund report of this kind from our team. Thank you again for advancing community-led disaster recovery.

About GlobalGiving’s Disaster Response

When a disaster strikes, recovery efforts led by people who live and work in affected communities are often overlooked and underfunded. GlobalGiving is changing this reality. Since 2004, we've been shifting decision-making power to crises-affected communities through trust-based grantmaking and support.

We make it easy, quick, and safe to support people on the ground who understand needs in their communities better than anyone else.

They were there long before the news cameras arrived, and they’ll be there long after the cameras leave. They know how to make their communities more resilient to future disasters, and they’re already hard at work. GlobalGiving puts donations and grants directly into their hands. Because the status quo—which gives the vast majority of funding to a few large organizations—doesn’t make sense.
