Summer 2024 Malawi Refurb Wells Interim Report

By Tom Webber | U.S. Development Director

The Summer 2024 quarter was a good one for the Malawi refurb well project. 7 borewells were refurbished, bringing safe, clean water to almost 4,000 people living around the Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve. Since the Malawi project started in 2023, BridgIT has now completed 45 individual projects in Malawi serving almost 23,000 rural villagers.

BridgIT’s development model employs local implementing partners to build its water projects. This model has many advantages including benefitting from local knowledge, providing local employment, and building local capacity. BridgIT’s Malawian implementing partner, the Wildlife & Environmental Society of Malawi (WESM) has a long history of working with communities adjacent to environmentally sensitive areas with the goals to preserve wildlife, and help the people to graduate from extreme poverty. BridgIT shares those goals, and looks forward to refurbish more wells to help the local communities and to help preserve Nkhotakota elephants and other wildlife.

Capacity building is an important aspect of BridgIT’s work in Malawi, which is why Wendy Tisdell, BridgIT’s Founding Director, takes regular trips to work with WESM to enhance the relationship between the two nonprofits. This includes creating and implementing BridgIT’s Theory of Change project to help its partners adopt a meaningful set of policies, from Human Rights to Privacy to Whistleblowing. In addition, this work includes working together to enhance financial systems and reporting.

Your donations to BridgIT’s Malawi Refurb Wells Project allow us to bring safe, clean water to thousands of people in the communities surrounding the wildlife reserve, which eases pressure on the wildlife populations in the reserve. Thank you so much.
