ESAR/Orientame proposes to create an international referral center for safe and legal abortion services, that is able to provide logistical aid and financial support to vulnerable women. The service would provide access to legal abortion services for women with pregnancies at gestational ages until 20.6 weeks for middle to low-income countries like Honduras, Belize, El Salvador, Caribbean islands, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay and Brazil
Latin America is one o the regions that restrict abortion services the most, women who have abortions and the practitioners who provide them are constantly condemned and persecuted. Additionally, some countries that have legal exceptions and might regulate and provide legal abortion services, have not implemented them given the high social stigmatization to these services. Hence, it is impossible for most women to find trustworthy, legal and safe abortion services at any stage of their pregnancy
We intent to supply safe and legal abortion services to 170 vulnerable women in two years. Additionally, a secondary group will be positively impacted since we plan to refer non-eligible women to safe Comprehensive Management of Unwanted Pregnancy (CMUP) services in the ten countries where ESAR operates.
We intend to provide 170 safe abortions in the first two years and scale up to impacting at least 500 women and girls in the first five years of the project. We might have a secondary effect by referring to an important volume of non-eligible women to our CMUP providers in ten LATAM countries. We expect to rise to at least 1500 women in the following 3 years. We wait that at least 84% of these women will initiate a Modern contraceptive method and 55% will initiate a LARC in the first 5 years.
