All 301 households received at least 3 distributions of food baskets in 2019. The bulk food included maize, beans, rice, cooking oil, and sometimes a bit of fresh vegetables from the Center's garden. These food baskets ensured the households would have well rounded nutritious meals at home. Generally, there are 1-2 Makindu Children's Program sponsored kids in a household. There are also usually at least two other children in the home, either a sibling, cousin, or other orphaned child needing shelter. We estimate, then, that over 1,200 children and the 301 guardians of the households benefitted from the food baskets.
One child, in particular, has greatly benefitted from the home delivery food baskets. He was identified recently as possibly malnourished, and subsequent screenings confirmed severe malnutrition. He lives too far from the Center to come for daily meals, and his guardian does not have a reliable source of income to provide food at home. So Makindu Center staff designed a food and nutrition plan for this boy complete with delivered food baskets. Today, thanks to the intervention and the regular supply of bulk food, we are happy to report the boy is now nourished and doing well. Further, because of his adequate nutrition, teachers report he is performing much better in school.
Thank you for helping these hungry children!
