Holiday Food Baskets Bring Families Together

By Diana Richardson | Project Leader

Basic nutrition in Kenya has become more expensive than ever in 2018. Wheat prices have been rising since August in Kenya, as much as 15%, which makes a household's food budget more difficult to manage.Your help is making a difference for families during the holidays.

Through your donations, Makindu Children's Program delivered Holiday Food Baskets to 380 households this week. This food will become celebratory meals to as many as 2,000 children and the guardians who parent them. Your generosity helps to not only feed these vulnerable children, it also helps the children engage in and maintain their spiritual beliefs, ceremonies and traditions in the home and community and nurtures their sense of belonging.

Many households will make a holiday dish like Sukuma Wiki, a traditional Kenyan dish that is prepared with collard greens, tomatoes and onions and typically served with ugali. Sukuma wiki is simple, with few ingredients but is packed full of nutrients. It consists of greens, tomatoes and onion sautéed until soft. Raw collard greens have a slightly bitter taste to them, but sautéing softens them and when cooked with the tomato and onion they have a softer, more pleasant, flavor profile. The greens provide vitamins A, K, and C. The finished dish is full of flavor and texture. For holiday meals, adding cooked meat or different vegetables such as bell pepper or carrots gives it extra flavor and heartiness.

Thank you so very much for making the holidays merrier for the children May the new year bring you peace, health and prosperity!
