Entebbe Primary School in Wakiso district Uganda serves 1,200 children. During a community visit, we found that many children were struggling to learn because their families could not afford to feed them regular meals each day. Not knowing where their next meal would come from, these children struggled to focus on their lessons with an empty stomach. We will provide nutritious lunches to 1,000 school children every day for one year to ensure they can thrive in school and beyond.
Students and teachers at Entebbe Primary School report that most students do not have access to regular meals, impeding their performance at school. Chronic malnutrition can hold back generations of progress by causing stunting, permanent physical and cognitive damage, increased disease, and educational delays. Teachers have reported that the hunger in the region decreases school attendance and makes it more difficult for students to focus on difficult subject matter.
We began providing school lunches to 300 children in 2019 prior to COVID-19 shutdowns. In 2021, we will provide daily nutritious lunches to 1,000 students - ensuring they are well nourished and incentivizing school attendance. We will work with the local community to source nutritious lunches that will be distributed every day to 1,000 children facing hunger. The program will provide daily lunches for an entire year, which will facilitate long term improvements in school performance.
The school lunch program is only the beginning of our work in Wakiso. By establishing a community presence, we will lay the foundation for long term investment in better education, including building a library and improving education quality through teacher training. We imagine the school serving as a regional standard with the lunch and library programs attracting children from neighboring districts. Improved education will lead to better economic outcomes for Wakiso's children in the future.
