LITERACY PROJECT FOR AT-RISK CHILDREN IN AFRICA

We are pleased to provide you with a quarterly project report for the Literacy Project for At-Risk Children in Africa. Thanks to your invaluable support and generous contributions, we have achieved significant progress in our mission to empower at-risk children through enhanced literacy skills.

In this quarter, a total of 92 children actively participated in our weekly after-school literacy classes. The classes were thoughtfully designed in three segments to cater to the specific needs of the children.

Firstly, we focused on phonological awareness lessons, which aimed to develop the children's understanding of sounds and their relationship to letters. Through various engaging activities, including rhyming games and sound recognition exercises, the children developed essential phonemic awareness skills. These skills are fundamental in their ability to decode and understand written language.

Secondly, we incorporated word building activities into our classes to enhance the children's vocabulary and word recognition skills. Through interactive games and exercises, the children learned to identify and construct words, expanding their understanding of language and strengthening their reading abilities.

Lastly, we introduced reading fluency activities, such as reading theatre, to promote confidence and fluency in reading. The children were encouraged to participate in group readings, role-play, and other interactive activities that made the learning process enjoyable and engaging. These activities aimed to instill a love for reading and improve comprehension skills among the children.

The impact of your generosity cannot be overstated. Your donations have enabled us to provide the necessary resources, instructional materials, and learning aids for these at-risk children. Through your support, we were able to create a safe and nurturing learning environment that stimulated their interest in literacy and fostered their cognitive development.

We remain committed to continuously improving and expanding this project. Moving forward, we plan to implement additional literacy interventions that address the specific needs of the children and further enhance their reading and comprehension skills. We are also exploring partnerships with educational institutions to extend the reach of this initiative and provide greater resources to the children.

LITERACY Project Update

The literacy class in this quarter witnessed the individual achievement of each subgroup. 

The concept of the alphabet previously taught were presented as pictures of sound. The learners participated in their various groups three times weekly.  The classes were structured as an after school program. Six to nine hours was the duration for the classes and lasted for four months. 

Subgroup 1

Explicit instructions regarding the first stage of written language which is phonemic awareness was taught. The learners were taught how to manipulate the sounds of the English language apart from meaning. This class explored introductory lessons on how these sounds (phonemes) are encoded using the regular 26 letters of the alphabet. 

Subgroup 2

The focus lessons in this group are understanding the relationship of speech to print.  The emerging readers were also introduced to high frequency words but without the burden of rote memory usually associated with them. 

Subgroup 3

Explicit instructions on word morphology to enhance vocabulary enrichment as well as reading comprehension skills and strategies were taught. The writing process and traits were also explored while some forms of writing were introduced. 

Five instructors were engaged with two support staff for the learning period.  Remunerations was paid and we bought a copy of the Advance Learners English Dictionary to facilitate learning.

Over sixty children participated in this quarter. The Literacy class is an all year round program. Your generosity is what helps BMAN to succeed in this project.
