During the reporting period from Feb 2021 – May 2021, Gaza Strip experienced aggressive Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip on 10 May 2021 which lasted for 11 continues days. This came on top of all emergencies that Gaza strip went through starting from the 15 years of imposed blockade, the deterioration of the socio-economic situation, and the very high rates of unemployment poverty, and at the end the transmission of COVID19 within a community that already suffer fragile health system.
During the reporting period, MoH reported 107,845 cases have been registered from the startup of the transmission of COVID19 until 25 May 2021, among which 1010 deaths, and 2358 active cases.
The beneficiaries of this intervention from Al Awda Hospital during the reporting period were 14,523, who benefited from services provided at Al Awda Hospital.
This intervention came on a time of an urgent need to intervene to confront the spread of COVID-19 among the Palestinian community in Gaza strip especially speaking after the Israeli attack. So, Al Awda Hospital despite of the emergency state triggered, continue providing emergency services and maternity services in addition to some outpatient services consultations.
The provision of essential services required imposing safety measures and precaution procedures, and the beneficiaries of the intervention during this reporting period were are follows:
- (2499 ) beneficiaries from the Emergency department.
- (1203 ) beneficiaries from the maternity department.
- (8995) beneficiaries from the outpatient clinic services.
- (1826) beneficiaries from the surgical department.
First Story:
A. Sh. is a one of our colleagues working in the projects department at UHWC main office. He tested positive in 18 May 2021 at Al Awda Hospital. He fled his home because his neighborhood was threatened to be targeted by the Israeli Forces.
Knowing that he is an infected person, put him in front of his ethical responsibility towards strictly applying the safety measures not only to protect himself while being home displaced, but also to protect other and his family from the infection.
A.stated, “ Thanks to this intervention, If I didn’t know that I’m infected, I would have not been taking safety measures and I would put my family and my relatives at risk”
Mr. Sh. was one of the beneficiaries from the project " Limiting dissemination of COVID-19 in Gaza Strip " that was funded by GlobalGiving, who benefited from the PPE that have been brought and distributed to protect our teams from being infected.
The second story:
Dr. B. S. is a general surgeon living in the north of Gaza Strip, in Jabalia he is one of the qualified surgeon working at Al Awda Hospital and at our UHWC Al Awda Health Center in Rafah ( part time) , and he used to conduct hundreds of general surgical operations on a monthly basis.
UHWC set a triage point at the entrance of the hospital. Nobody allowed entering the hospital before being checked. All teams working at Al Awda hospital, and patients are asked many questions related to COVID 19, besides measuring the body temperature and sanitizing them with alcohol gel and water with chloride concentration, and any suspicious cases was asked to do the IgG/IgM tests at our lab, but mandatory to be done for all the staff.
B. S. tested positive to COVID19 at the triage point before entering the surgical operation room, saved may patients from being infected, and also saved putting all colleagues and employees at the risk of infection.
B. S. stated, " Thanks to the triage point and this intervention for helping us to detect the cases infected, If I didn’t do the test, I wouldn’t know I’m infected. By this I protected not only my family, but also the environment of the hospital and the health center safe”
Without this intervention, Al Awda Hospital would not be able to intervene to protect its environment, its patient and its working staff, and is now able to contribute to limit the spread of Corona virus in Gaza Strip. This fund also strengthened the health system and increased its capacity to respond to the health needs of facing Corona virus.
In addition, targeting poor families in marginalized areas, especially patients, elderly and PWD reduced their infection with Corona virus and having good health and well-being.
