Today in Greece, more than 90,000 refugees and asylum seekers are struggling to meet their basic needs, as a result of harsh asylum policies coupled with inflation driving up the cost of food and housing. The majority of them live in Athens, where even the locals struggle to find affordable housing, let alone those who face language barriers and discrimination. Regrettably, over the past two years more people seeking refuge, particularly single mothers and people with vulnerabilities, face hunger and homelessness. Each day, dozens of them reach out to us for reliable information and support.
Our dedicated social workers work tirelessly to address their pressing needs. We have facilitated school enrollments for children, scheduled vital medical appointments at public hospitals, and provided referrals for legal and housing support. Moreover, we help 225 families put food on the table and access baby supplies and hygiene items every month. Thanks to your continued support, we have been able to add 25 additional families to our monthly distribution list. This means that we provide nearly 1000 people the essential monthly resources they need to survive.
We are also thrilled to share that our emergency housing project is running smoothly. Clara* and Merveille*, along with their children, have moved into our safe homes. Now that school is out for the summer, their kids participate in summer courses and camps, while the mothers proceed with their vocational training. Your support not only provides a roof over their heads, but also builds their self-reliance and facilitates their integration into our community.
Your generosity has empowered us to support more than 8,500 people including 3,500 children since starting this project. Your compassion will have a lasting impact on their lives and offer hope to those who need it the most. We are deeply grateful for your unwavering support as we continue our mission to protect the lives of people seeking refuge in Greece.
