This project will provide practical beekeeping skills and the necessary equipment to establish bee farm for each of the 50 extreme poor rural women, to produce honey and other bee by-products for them to earn additional income and thereby promote sustainable livelihood in 10 rural communities in the Delta State of Nigeria. The trainees will be required to empower one additional woman in their community annually for five years, after the first harvest.
The people of the Niger Delta region were predominantly into farming and fishing, which is the trade that had supported them adequately well over the years. But with the coming of oil production in 1956 and its negative effect on land and water resources, their earning capacity grossly dwindled, which impact negatively on their well-being. Women are more affected because of their concern for the welfare of the entire family.
PAFPI will provide practical beekeeping training and equipment production for the 50 women to own and manage their individual bee farm for additional income, and be able to empower a woman annually for five years in their community. This will help fight the scourge of extreme poverty, guarantee sustained income, build their capacity to enable them to take care of the wellbeing of their immediate family, community, and realizing their potentials.
In addition to the benefits of having 50 women to rise above extreme poverty, 250 additional women will be empowered within five years through the multiplier effect of the empowerment support given by the direct beneficiaries in each of the 10 communities. The project will also promote apiculture for the protection and sustainability of the environment.
