Igniting the creative spark in rural South Africa

Dear Friend of YOUPSA,

First, a big Thank You to all those who are supporting our programmes. Team work makes the dream work! There are countless children in South Africa’s rural areas and they are the most neglected people in the country. We are delighted that you, like us, notice their great potential and needs, and wish for them to grow.
We structure each of our Afterschool Enrichment Programme sessions around skill-building activities that enhance childrens’ confidence, collaboration, critical thinking, problem solving, social skills, creativity, literacy and maths skills. Another important part of programme is the lasting memories, joy and laughter that live in the hearts of all participants. “The happy moments we give to children become part of who they are forever” - Nancy Kopman
We hope you will enjoy this update and photos from our programmes.

Which one does not belong?
YOUPSA children love engaging in the thought provoking logic game 'Which One Doesn't Belong.' Each puzzle has 4 pictures, maths expressions, equations, graphs, etc. The goal is for the players to determine from their own understanding what they think doesn’t belong in the overall group of 4, and then express the reason why it doesn’t belong. There is no right or wrong answer, all you need to do is back your statement up with good reasoning. The children love this interactive learning method. Discussing the puzzles together and explaining their thinking creates a lot of excitement. There was such a buzz in the room!

Every child loves water
Did you know that YOUPSA provides kids with the lifesaving skill of swimming? Already 49 children have successfully completed a basic swim course with our amazing volunteer swim instructor Karen Talbot.
We want all of the children in our programmes to be safe in and around the water. Not only do these swimming lessons help prevent drowning – the kids become stronger and confident too!

We love having visitors
Two international supporters of YOUPSA, Jacaranda Hope for Children Foundation and the Dieter and Bettina Wulkow Foundation, came to visit the YOUPSA programmes and engage with the children. The visitors and the children had such a good time playing and talking together! A huge Thank you to both for coming to visit and being such a bright light in the childrens' lives.

A weaving project by the YOUPSA children
Each child constructed their own cardboard weaving loom. Different beautiful styles were created using a technique of over and under through the warp threads.
This project lasted over a number of weeks. The learning skills in this project included patience, focus, fine motor coordination, measurement, following instructions, planning, teamwork and much more.

Literacy building activity
At every session of YOUPSA's Afterschool Enrichment Programme, children enjoy interactive literacy building activities. Sadly, the majority of rural children in South Africa go through school without developing basic functional literacy skills.
The 'Spill and Spell' word building kit is made up of plastic bottle tops, each of which displays a different letter of the alphabet. Our children love using these alphabet tops to build many different words, to learn about and discuss new vocabulary.

Art makes children powerful
We provide children with a unique opportunity to receive weekly art lessons, which is otherwise completely beyond their reach. Volunteers Bruwer and Anthea teach the children many different art techniques and how to use different mediums.
