Fish Farming 12 Jobs Report

With individual LI donors contributing the start-up funds for tanks and seed fish, our farmers were able to harvest an initial crop of 840 catfish which yielded significant profits at market. Those fish which were not large enough to sell have improved nutrition throughout the village through distribution to the disabled, sick and elderly. The bulk of the profits from the first harvest were saved to reinvest in the project, which will allow more farmers and their families to participate in the cooperative. The remaining 30% of the profits were distributed equally among participating farmers, enabling them to feed their families well and to send their children to school instead of keeping them on their farms to work.

Skills Acquisition 11 Jobs Report Eleven Yelwan Makaranta youth are now fully trained and each has gone into business for himself. Most Bauchi citizens do not have vehicles of their own, so our newly trained mechanics provide essential repair services for the motocycle taxis serving every sector of the city. Our tailors provide affordable custom tailoring which was previously unavailable within the community. And the need for competent welding is so great within the region that our newly trained welders have a six-month backlog of work and dozens of young adults are applying to be similarly trained. All graduates are now providing vital services within the greater community and the income they generate has raised the standard of living for both their immediate and extended families.

Computer Literacy for the Disabled 20 Jobs Report Two of our computer training graduates are now seeking further training, while the remaining eighteen are employed either within CYDI itself or on their own as private entrepreneurs. As word has spread of their new skills, people within the surrounding communities have begun bringing typing, binding, and laminating work to our trainees. Our graduates are also training others who will eventually have the opportunity to work under their supervision. They are thus providing needed services within the community while sharing their newfound autonomy with others.
