Libya Emergency Response: Final Update&Gratitude

By Anastasiia Karaoglu | Programs and Partnerships Officer

On September 10th, Storm Daniel struck northeastern Libya, bringing torrential rains and flash floods that devastated numerous cities and towns. According to UNICEF, the massive flooding claimed more than 4,300 lives, with over 8,500 people still missing.

Beyond the tragic loss of life, the disaster caused widespread injuries, destruction, and the displacement of 43,000 people. In response to this humanitarian crisis, the International Blue Crescent Foundation (IBC) took immediate action, providing heaters, blankets, food, tents, shelters, hygiene kits, and drinking water, along with psychosocial support. These efforts were made possible through the generous contributions of donors worldwide. Thanks to this support, IBC reached over 22,500 individuals, and we are immensely grateful to our donors on GlobalGiving for being an integral part of this mission.

We are proud to report that we have delivered the remaining blankets to Sudanese refugees affected by the floods and have transitioned to long-term recovery and sustainability efforts. One of our key initiatives was medical training conducted in Kufra City, aimed at strengthening the capacity of 70 healthcare professionals—doctors, nurses, and healthcare workers—by enhancing their clinical and professional skills. This program focused on knowledge transfer within the healthcare sector to improve services and community health outcomes. In the coming months, we plan to expand our training programs further.

The IBC team would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to our donors for standing with us in this journey to support and comfort those in need. Your kindness—whether big or small—has a profound impact on the world, and we hope to continue making a difference together. Please. consider supporting our other projects, and do not hesitate to contact us if you would like more information about IBC’s global initiatives or find out about additional ways to help create a safer and more compassionate world.
