Our Library Bus is still to come, but what we have now is a beautiful bamboo building that houses the Library, the Training Center and a volunteer suite.
We inaugurated the Intercultural Center in Don Juan with a local tradition: “I haven´t had so much fun, since I was a kid”, says Ramonita (age 58), a neighbor from Don Juan. “When I was a girl I would do anything to be on time for the local Chigualo, it was when you met people, made friends and danced till midnight; with the TV and the cell phones, people don´t get around as much, and all they want to do is imitate whatever they see on TV”.
This year FAMM organized a Chigualo to inaugurate the Intercultural Center in Don Juan. A Chigualo is a traditional festivity in Manabí. People get together to sing and participate in a battle of wits and verse. The traditional elements that can´t go missing are the sweets, the Christmas punch, a live orchestra and dancing. This beautiful tradition was brought back for our neighbors in Don Juan on December 22nd. Celebrating our own culture, dignifies people, enlivens our traditions and offers alternatives for intercultural exchange.
