“We would be healthier and more balanced if we had better experiences in our early childhood,” says Sara Miranda, director for 15 years of the Monseñor Santiago Tapia nursery, which Hogar de Cristo maintains in the commune of La Pintana. She is referring to giving them a space for care and education, for tranquility, for games, conditions that, in most cases, they do not have at home.
This nursery, which currently serves 54 infants and toddlers between 3 months and 2 and a half years, has been operating for 30 years in El Castillo. It is a very vulnerable area, with high drug use, drug trafficking and violence, where shootings are frequent, where drugs have been found in children's bags more than once, where many grandmothers are in charge of grandchildren because their parents are in jail. Where multidimensional poverty is palpable in its maximum expression.
AFFECTIVE BOND
As a way of compensating for this hostile environment, the nursery is characterized by being very welcoming, a hallmark that is highlighted by parents and guardians. “Our policy is to have a very good emotional bond because we consider that it is the basis for learning,” says its director. That is why −in addition to worrying about creating a pleasant and calm environment− they maintain a close bond with families. For example, they have implemented a WhatsApp where they send photos daily so that relatives can see how their children are doing.
Thank you for helping children living in poverty change their reality from a young age, giving them more opportunities in life.
