Jorgito attends a Hogar de Cristo kindergarten located in Lo Espejo. Apparently, he has autism spectrum disorders. His mother suspected it because of his attitudes and at the office they confirmed it, although the neurologist's corroboration is still pending. Even tough the kindergarten does not have specialists in ASD, she highlights the great work of the educators, who have brought out his potential.
María (40) is the guardian of Jorge, 3 years old. Her son has been attending Sol Naciente kindergarten for a year now and she proudly reports the significant progress he has made given his condition of ASD (autism spectrum disorders).
Evidence shows that children who attend nursery school and kindergarten perform better in their educational trajectory. In addition, kindergarten education is crucial and decisive in overcoming poverty and social inequality. It has been proven that in families where there are greater economic difficulties, kindergarten attendance brings greater advantages for the labor market insertion process, especially for women, who have historically been the main caregivers.
Therefore, the decrease in kindergarten education attendance that has occurred during this pandemic period is of concern. It is estimated that between 2019 and 2021, the drop was 9% in children enrolled at the early education level in general. The problem for the first cycle is that attendance is not compulsory, as it is at the other levels. There are still many families who do not see the importance of their children attending a nursery or kindergarten.
Mabel, director of "Sol Naciente", in her career working in kindergarten education, confirms: "The kindergarten is a great contribution because while the children attend here every day, the mothers have the opportunity to look for a job, to work, to do some work that allows them to earn some income. And obviously they do it with great confidence because their children are in a place that provides them with protection and education, and they take advantage of these hours to generate resources and be able to leave the circle of poverty".
Regarding Jorge's development, Maria she only praises the work done at the kindergarten, which does not have professionals specialized in ASD issues, such as speech therapists or occupational therapists. But they do have a team of educators and technicians who support him so that he can reach his full potential.
Maria says: "He has made 100% progress. He recognizes colors, numbers, letters. Something that I think he would have done at home, but it would have cost him much more. Besides, here he is with many more children, he plays. He has more personality. He doesn't yell so much. He even has more tolerance to frustration because for anything you could not say no to him, and now they say no, and it is no. He is more tolerant to frustration. I really appreciate that the aunts are very patient with him. All of them in general. Sometimes from the door he starts with his show and the aunts console him and he gets over it lightly. He got so fond of them".
