In November 2021, we received a phone call from Maria's neighbours. She was staying with them temporarily after losing her home in a fire.
Maria's abusive ex boyfriend felt threatened by her close relationship with her younger sister, and accused them of siding together. Out of anger, he went to visit the sister, who was pregnant at the time, and beat her so badly with a stick that she ended up in the hospital. While Maria was caring for her there, he burnt down Maria's house in an attempt to leave her homeless, stranded and reliant on him. Fortunately, her children had been with the neighbours and no one was hurt - but she had the shock of her life when she realised everything she owned in the world was gone.
After visiting Maria and her family, we realised the urgent need to help her put a roof over her family's heads again. Thanks to your support, we were able to build them a safe and secure low-cost home. With donations we collected from the public, we were also able to provide them with new clothes and furniture. The joy and appreciation radiates from their smiles!
Maria says, "I will keep testifying to the community about the wonderful work that Lesedi la Batho does for me and our society."
