From Thirst to Thrive: How a Water Tank Transformed Learning at a Butambala Primary School

It’s a moment of joy at a Butambala Primary School and the splashes of water echo as pupils’ line up to fill their jerry cans. For many, this simple act of accessing clean water at school was unimaginable just a few months ago. Before Another Hope Children's Ministries (AHCM) intervened with the construction of a liter water tank in May 2024, pupils and teachers faced a daily struggle fetching water from far-off, often unreliable sources. Today, the school is a different place, thanks to this life-changing project.

Since the water tank was installed, life at the Primary School has transformed. The water tank has done more than save time; it has significantly improved hygiene and health at the school. With water readily available, pupils can wash their hands regularly, a practice that was previously difficult to enforce.

The benefits of the tank extend beyond the school’s gates. During the dry season, when water sources in the village become even scarcer, the school has opened its doors to the community, allowing them to access water. This has fostered a strong sense of unity between the school and local families. For many families, the school's water tank provides relief that was previously unimaginable. It has strengthened trust between the school and parents, who now feel reassured that their children are in a safer and more supportive environment.

With more children attending school regularly, the primary school is now progressing well. AHCM’s intervention has given the school a resource that will continue to impact generations of pupils to come. The success of the water tank project has not only improved the educational environment but has also uplifted the community, creating a shared sense of responsibility and hope.
