Millions of people, especially children, assist community kitchens in Argentina. The project will consist of the construction and installation of efficient and sustainable kitchens in ten community kitchens in Buenos Aires that will optimize energy consumption, costs and cooking times through an alternative method based on "rocket" cooking stoves.
Community kitchens occupy a central place in the care of vulnerable populations. In a context where nearly 40% of the Argentine population lives in poverty and 10 million people cannot access the necessary food by their own means, these spaces are key to the survival of families living in poverty. The cooking method is a constraint for this activity as the bottled gas used is very expensive. This leads to the use of alternative cooking methods, using firewood, which can be deficient and unsafe.
The size of these "rocket" cooking stoves, their ease of operation and the fuel required (wood), together with the greater efficiency of combustion and heat transfer, make them devices that can improve the daily work of those who cook in terms of time, cost, and safety. This project consists of building and installing 10 institutional kitchens in community kitchens and evaluate the experience in order to scale it to other social organizations.
The project includes training for neighbors living in the neighborhoods where the 10 dining halls where the devices will be built are located. After the finalization of the project, the evaluation of the results will make possible to adjust and improve it where needed to scale the solution to other community kitchens in the country.
