Latest Update on our Project for Children with Cancer

By Dr. Samuel Guma | Co Founder, Executive Director

As we pass the half way point of the year, the economic pressures that many people and organisations are experiencing does not appear to be easing. It is tough times and we are grateful that our hostel for the children with cancer, is still operating, but without a funder to support the operational costs, it is a month-by-month struggle. Relief has been through support from locals with in-kind food support and donations through GlobalGiving.

This quarter (April, May, June), the hostel supported, 85 children and their caregivers, 2 children have completed their treatment, 1 child is in palliative care. Sadly, 9 children passed away.

During April we had our longtime supporters Carol and Tom visit us and they share their experiences.

“Interacting with the children at the hostel and seeing how they deal with their illness is inspiring. They enjoy interacting with the other children and the organised activities, it gives them some respite from their treatment.

I also saw how heartbreaking it was for a mother to be informed that the doctors could not do anything more for her young son. Her daughter who is 3 has bone cancer and recently had her leg amputated. The staff were amazing providing care and support for this family. The young boy was connected with palliative care support near his home. He passed away at home with his family. The sadness is also felt by the other children who form strong connections with the other children in the hostel.

We felt it was time for the children to have some fun and we took them on an excursion to the zoo. They were very excited. It was a great day. The older children are wonderful, they are kind and look after the younger children. Experiencing how much the children enjoyed the day, having fun, seeing the animals and playing games after lunch was something we will treasure.

We will miss them. But we will be back next year!” says Carol.

The donations that you make are so important in helping these children. Please continue with your support. Below are some of the children you are helping.
