The Girl Child Art Foundation is thrilled to share a report on our recent Dance program with the girls in the Bamako Community, where our studio is located. The Dance programs at the GCAF Studio aim to empower young girls to express themselves through various dance forms, including hip-hop, contemporary, and traditional African dances. The classes for the year began in February 2024 with an initial enrollment of 45 girls.
Since February, our classes have consistently maintained an attendance of around 40 girls per session. These dedicated girls devote at least 2 hours and 30 minutes, three times a week, to sharpen their dance skills at our studio under the guidance of our experienced and qualified instructors. At the start of the dance classes, instructors and students engaged in detailed discussions outlining the year's curriculum and expectations. Within the first month, the girls were tasked with learning four song compilations, each incorporating different dance steps in preparation for the upcoming GCAF Girls Dance Day. Rehearsals were lively, with intricate dance moves introduced to add excitement and enjoyment for the girls. While infusing a touch of cultural pride into the presentation, it was decided that each girl would bring a piece of ANKARA, a Nigerian fabric, to contribute to the stage backdrop. The vibrant designs and colours of these fabrics beautified the stage.
During the event, two separate groups performed, ensuring every girl had the opportunity to showcase her talent. The first group, comprising 15 girls, executed their routines flawlessly, while the second group, consisting of younger dancers, demonstrated their dance, showing how far they have come in the program. For the dress code, the girls were instructed to wear black tops and tights to facilitate freedom of movement. They were also encouraged to incorporate headgear into various styles. Face painting was also introduced, allowing other girls to express themselves creatively.
On the day of the presentation, a crowd of approximately 50 girls gathered, including both participants and others eager to join in the presentation in one way or another. The fabrics brought by the girls were artfully assembled to create a stunning backdrop, while face painting added an extra layer of excitement. Throughout the program, the girls showed great support for one another, clapping and cheering after each performance. The confidence and self-expression displayed by the girls were very inspiring. At the conclusion, feedback was gathered, with many expressing enjoyment and gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to the program's success.
One participant, Sekoni , shared her experience, stating, "I enjoyed being part of this presentation because I did not think I would be included as I do not like to dance. But I enjoyed doing what I am good at drawing and face painting."
Notable highlights of the Girls Dance Day included witnessing the progress of girls who attended only a few rehearsals and observing their dedication to mastering the choreography. Additionally, the girls' creativity shone through as they styled headgear for each other, adding a unique and diverse style to the presentation.
GCAF extends heartfelt appreciation to all donors whose contributions ensured the success of this program. Your generosity enables us to compensate our instructors and provide refreshments for the girls during their visits to the GCAF Studio. Thank you for creating an inclusive space where every girl child can thrive.
