However, they have learned from past experience that this is usually the case after a horrible year of smoke, like the one in 2015. That's why YUM is still vigilant and continues to go to villages and schools, organising workshops, discussions as well as planting trees and teaching people how to make compost. The "No Burning" message is emphasized at each one of these gatherings.
Besides the workshops and presentations, volunteer doctors continue to come regularly and weekends are no holidays for the YUM staff who generously accompany the doctors and organise community gatherings so all those in need of a check-up get their chance to meet the doctor.
One of the people benefitting from free medical check-up and advice is Lohek, who is 87 years old and lives in the village of Tangkiling, close to the river. Because of the effects of the smoke, Lohek has had difficulty sleeping because of heavy coughing and breathing problems. After meeting a doctor, Lohek said "I can finally sleep well now, and my breathing has become more stable thanks to the medicines that were given to me by the doctor."
Thank you once again to everyone who has generously donated to this project and who continue to support Yayasan Usaha Mulia's work. Happy New Year and we wish you all a great year 2017 filled with many blessings!
