The International Criminal Court was established to prosecute perpetrators of human atrocities such as genocide and war crimes; many of the same issues that we confront at 3 Generations. There have been other international criminal courts in the past, but currently the ICC is the single largest and most powerful international human rights monitor and the only criminal court in history to have the authority to order one party to pay direct reparations to another. The work of this respected institution is hugely significant, not just for those who have been directly affected by serious atrocities, but also for those of us who, because of the ICC, will not ever experience such unspeakable human rights violations.
Unfortunately, many people aren't aware of the ICC's work but we want to change that. At 3 Generations our main goal is to give the survivors, who share their experiences and lives with us, an outlet from their grief through the storytelling process. But when it comes to our support of the court, we also want these stories to inspire and support its investigations and provide awareness surrounding the specific human rights issues that both 3 Generations and the ICC deal with. Ultimately, our goals and the goals of the ICC go hand in hand.
