When we met Joyce, we planned to include her in our film about sex trafficking survivors, but it turned out her story was so much more.
Her struggles stemmed from a childhood of being shuffled between foster homes and being sexually abused by her guardians. We thought her story of being taken from her mother at a young age was compelling, but we soon learned it was hardly unique. Between 1941 and 1967 as many as one-third of Native kids were separated from their parents under federal programs. The impact on the Native community cannot be overstated, and will have an effect on countless generations to come.
We've made a 26 minute film about Joyce and another Native survivor of foster care. By recording the stories of Joyce and Paulette, we're not only telling their stories to the world, we're telling the stories of the countless kids who grew up without parents, community or identity, and the thousands of kids who are still put into foster care despite new protective legislation.
We need donations to send the film to festivals and put it into distribution, where it will be seen by university students across the country. We've come a long way and the filming and editing is finished. We just need to make that last push for Joyce and Paulette, who are so excited to have their stories told.
