Community Meeting with villagers
Community Meeting with villagers

GOAL: Creating Model Villages in Mewat Region (Rajasthan and Haryana)

Problem Analysis:

In a country like India, where 70% of the total population live in villages, the Mewat region in Haryana is one of the most backward with respect to all socio-economic development parameters. Along with a very high level of illiteracy, unemployment, population growth, there is also high incidence of Infant Mortality Rate (IMR), poor maternal health, and mal-nutrition among the women and children.  The lack of regular basic health care services and proper infrastructure in this region has been impacting peoples’ lives for a long time. The scarcity of water is also a huge deterrent factor in the daily life of villagers adding up additional financial burden to them.

About Program:

The Integrated Rural Development program [IRDP] aims to develop and design community based integrated sustainable development program to improve health, nutrition, sanitation and livelihood status of the village with special focus on women, children and youths.

The IRDP intervention can be categorized into 5 elements:

[1] providing basic primary services in the village by organizing health clinics, setting up vocational training centers to impart computer and English classes along with life skills for youths, creating and strengthening Self-Help Groups [SHGs], providing skills based training to rural women and initiating income generation activities for them.

[2] Behavior Change Communication – Creating community awareness on the importance of maternal and child health, preventive measures for healthy living, nutrition, hygiene, sanitation, campaign against open defecation, gender issues and having a good environment.

[3] Ensuring safe drinking water at government schools, connecting water connection to girl’s toilets in schools and provision for community drinking water facilities in the village.

[4] Formation and activation of village level committees for ensuring proper health, sanitation education among adult and children, and a sustainable environment.

[5] Capacity building of PRIs [Panchayat Raj Institution] and Linking government ‘s schemes with all projects for the community.
