Project Report IV - Replicating a Model Village

Manisha- a success story
Manisha- a success story

Neemli is one of the villages adopted by Sukarya under INTEGRETED RURAL DEVELOPMNET PROJECT (IRDP) in Tijara Block of Alwar district, Rajasthan.  Being very far away from the mainstream with lack of connectivity, infrastructure with basic amenities and awareness, this village has been lagging behind in every sphere of life. From the perspective of maternal & child healthcare, one of the major problems has been that of home deliveries being preferred over institutional (PHC/CHC etc) births. The pregnant women were not registered with the Primary Health Centre (PHC) for ante-natal care (ANC) nor did they go for institutional deliveries.

To generate awareness and to change the mindset of the community in order to bring the community out from this trend, Sukarya organized health awareness sessions on a regular basis under its IRDP Project. Its project team mobilized the villagers to attend the sessions for close interaction with the community regarding institutional births to  improve mother and child health conditions. The benefits of pregnancy registration, blood tests, nutritional intakes, vaccinations and institutional deliveries were emphasized during the sessions. Various incentives under the governmental program of Janani Suraksha Yojna (JSY) were explained to the pregnant  women and their immediate family members.

Manisha  from Village Neemli, was pregnant, when she was approached by the Community Health Worker (CHW) of Sukarya to attend the Health Awareness Sessions. Initially, she hesitated to come out from her home to attend the session but due to the persistent efforts and explanation from the community health worker her family gave permission to hetr to attend the session.  After that she continuously attended the session. Manisha learned about the benifits of the session and disseminated the same to other women members of the community.

Subsequently, at the time of her delivery Manisha was shifted to the Community Health Center at Tijara Alwar ,of Rajasthan and gave birth to a healthy baby boy successfully and now she is very happy. Both Manisha and her child are safe, healthy and doing well. Now she has many words of thanks for the Sukarya team. Manisha says that “she will share the benefits of the institutional delivery to others and will try to convince those who still talks about traditional delivery at home.”
