Dear Friend,
I want to begin by acknowledging the challenges we have faced as a global community over the last few months, both with the COVID-19 pandemic and important conversations about racial justice and equality. I hope this update finds you and your families safe and well during such unprecedented times.
Since the subsequent lockdowns of international borders in March 2020, MAITS has made the decision to temporarily postpone all face-to-face programmes, in order to protect the health and wellbeing of all those we work with. This particularly important as we support people with disabilities, who are even more vulnerable to the virus.
MAITS are now very excited to be looking towards the future – and how we can digitally transform our programmes. Our intention is to adapt our training programmes to deliver online, beginning in March 2020. This is (obviously) subject to change.
MAITS deliver low cost, high impact programmes. Our work involves supporting infants born prematurely with disabilities by teaching parents and carers effective feeding techniques. These life-saving interventions prevent the risk of children with conditions like cerebral palsy from developing respiratory infections, which make them vulnerable to COVID-19. Our training also reduces preventable malnutrition, helping mothers to minimalize the need for medical care in a hospital setting, where infants are exposed to the virus.
We are currently working with our partner organisation in Zambia throughout this process. As we continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation, our priority is to ensure the health and safety of all involved.
However, your ongoing support in this fight is critical. We need now more than ever to continue to ensure children with disabilities receive the help they deserve.
We look forward to updating you later in the year with news about our programme in Zambia and thank you for your patience and supporting in these difficult times.
Best Wishes,
Esther Hamilton
CEO, MAITS
