Reforestation Workshops for Women Meliponiculturists

By Carolina Martinez Ceja | Communications Coordinator

The melipona bee, a stingless species native to the Yucatan Peninsula, is endangered. Its relationship with the Mayan people dates back millennia, as it is considered a gift from the gods. Today, groups of indigenous women dedicate their efforts to the care and reproduction of this species, generating income that improves the well-being of their families.

Thanks to your donation, the event "Reforestation Workshops for Women Meliponiculturists" took place to strengthen women's technical knowledge and provide tools to improve the climatic and productive conditions of the hives. During the workshops, 300 native plants and trees were distributed to supply essential nectar and pollen for melipona honey production while enhancing the climatic conditions in the communities.

Additionally, educational talks were held to reinforce sustainable practices and address the challenges of climate change that bees face. These indigenous women carry out these activities to protect the melipona bee and preserve this sacred and traditional practice.
