It takes a family to support a deaf child!

By Karina Martin | Director

Nzeve provides early identification services in the form of hearing tests. After the tests, Nzeve refers the children to the appropriate services. Some of the children who have been identified as hearing-impaired are referred to our Early Childhood Development (ECD) preschool. The children who come to Nzeve preschool are accompanied by their parents, who jointly with the child learn sign language. The inclusion of the deaf child’s family is important in the child’s development. Family plays an important role in the socialization of the child, teaching them about norms and expectations. Therefore, a deaf child’s development requires the families themselves to master sign language, so they can fully communicate and support their child. In February 2023, Nzeve facilitated a parent’s sign language workshop to enhance parents’ sign language skills, thus improving families’ communication with their deaf child. During the workshop, the parents were given practical activities, such as getting a child dressed and feeding and were asked to demonstrate how they would carry out a such conversation with their child in sign language. Other parents shared their feedback based on what has worked with their child and facilitators shared new signs that could be used. The workshop was attended by 22 mothers and 5 fathers and Nzeve received positive feedback from all parents. One of the mothers said: “Before, when my child wanted something, he would get very frustrated, cry and throw himself on the ground. I couldn’t understand what he wanted because I didn’t know how to communicate with him. Now that I know sign language, he is much calmer, because I can understand his needs and respond to them.”
