The Amaro Tan project in Pogradec, Albania operates a soup kitchen. In addition to the 135 school children that eat their daily lunch there, 25 mostly elderly, lonely people receive a daily warm meal. Some of them come to the location of the soup kitchen, and others that have trouble getting around have food brought to them in their homes.
Many of these men and women have no other options for food than what we can provide for them. So not only do we deliver them daily warm lunches, but every few months they will receive food packages with ingredients for them to cook for themselves – assuming they have the facilities to do so.
On some occasions, Franko Ali – a social worker at Amaro Tan – takes schoolchildren “on excursions” to the homes of these elderly folks, where they lend a hand with great enthusiasm: delivering lunch or firewood, cleaning, washing, painting walls and much more.
So while many of these children are recipients of the aid we provide, they see some of the other situations that exist in our city. They see that there are other people that are worse off than they themselves are. And they have an opportunity to experience the type of joy and fulfillment it brings to help others.
