We make it possible for the kids in rural Colombia

By Claudia Vergara | Alliance coordinator

In the way to get water
In the way to get water

La Palmira school in Toluviejo, Sucre has about 500 children and no potable water. To get water, they must go to a waterhole 500 meters away, across a main road, and they can only use it at break time, so that the students can go to the bathroom and only a trickle of the liquid comes out of the sink.

Report

November 2022

At Fundación Barco, with our ESCALA program, we remain committed to making possible the development and well-being of communities in Colombia through education. Thanks to the contributions of our donors and allies, like you, we are making decisive progress in the implementation of actions that contribute to school retention in rural schools in Colombia.

This time we would like to tell you about the progress we have made in the La Palmira school in the municipality of Toluviejo in the department of Sucre, in northern Colombia. There, we identified, together with the community, that the lack of access to potable water in the institution is a determining factor that affects school attendance and school retention. Moreover, this is a problem that impacts not only the school, but the entire community and even neighboring populations.

With the contributions received and joining efforts with an expert partner in the development of water purification systems, we agreed with the community and the authorities to provide a solution that includes the provision of infrastructure for the school that allows them to have potable water, in addition to educating the community to take care of the water and the commitment of the authorities for the sustainability of the project.

Thanks to this solution, we prevent diseases in children and their families, and we benefit the community, which will be able to obtain water on a regular basis. In addition, we train teachers committed to the responsible use and promotion of water, strengthening the synergy between the school, the community, and the local authorities.

These actions complement the accompaniment activities that we have been carrying out, which allow us to improve and strengthen the learning processes of children through teacher training, the revision of their class programs and the way they study.

Testimony:

"I am a community leader and a parent; I want to thank Fundación Barco for this work that brings us to this educational institution where we have 486 students and where the general population does not have drinking water. It is a joy for us as members of this educational community to have the presence of Fundación Barco and the municipal administration, to have a solution that we need so much. We, in the village of Palmira, where this Educational Institution is located, which is 7 km from the capital, do not have drinking water in any of our homes where we are more than 2,600 inhabitants.

We are grateful for this solution, as I say, our water is not drinkable water. We, as parents, live in a very poor population and quite hit by violence. Here we must buy a bag of water that costs us about 300 pesos for our children's snack, so we must take out 600 pesos that we do not have. Thank you for caring for us, this way we can send our children with the satisfaction that they will be able to have drinking water".

As a result of the generous donations and the continued support of donors, we can reach more children and youth from rural schools in Colombia with our ESCALA program, so that they have more and better opportunities. With your help #WeMakeItHappen. We invite you to share this message with your friends and family:
