Project Report | Aug 3, 2021
Training teachers for staying school

By Andres Sarmiento Andrade | Alliances Coordinator

We have taken the first step! Training teachers for staying school. (English Version)

Report update: July 2021

We would like to thank all donors and report the actions that have been taken so far regarding the work performed with teachers at  Obando School in Guachené (Cauca). All work has been done virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic and it has benefited 15 teachers.

Work has been focused on training teachers in three key topics for enhancing school attendance and continuity of the students in Obando School:

I. Teaching Styles

  • Teachers have been able to identify behaviors related to the different teaching styles inside the classrooms, and how these styles favor continuity of students in school

II. Emotion Management

  • Understanding emotions has allowed teachers to reflect on the way they manage them and how they affect classroom environment

III. Mediation and Negotiation

  • Teachers have recognized conflict as an opportunity that enables positive transformation inside and outside of school, with families and within communities

Teacher’s testimony:

During the training I like to pay attention to each topic and the easiest way to do it is applying what’s being taught to my own school context, I`m always thinking about one or two of my students whenever we touch upon a topic and try to apply what we’ve learned. I’ve already used this new knowledge on them without having them in front of me, when the workshop ends, I write changes I can make and implement, but also the ones I shouldn’t replicate, I know who is going to be willing to participate and which students are going to show resistance, but in the end all of them will make an effort because I’ve earned their trust, so I believe I will yield positive results.

Thanks to the knowledge, flavors, colors and smells being shared we’re always happy to come back to the institution, and we know the work being done will increase their desire to return to these friendly spaces that fulfill the expectations of our students, where they continue to feel that they not only have a school, but also a home, where they are heard, valued and taken care of, they don`t want to drop-out” – Guidance teacher Ariela Onelly Mina

Thank you for your support.

Obando:

I. Estilos Docentes
