Access to clean drinking water and sanitation facilities is crucial for maintaining public health, especially in educational institutions. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), safe drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) are essential for preventing diseases and ensuring overall well-being. WHO states that access to clean water reduces the incidence of diarrhea by 25%, a significant factor contributing to child mortality. In Uganda, the Ministry of Education and Sports emphasizes the importance of WASH in schools, citing its impact on student health, attendance, and academic performance.
Uganda faces significant challenges in water and sanitation. Nearly 90% of diarrhea-related deaths are attributed to unsafe drinking water. Nationally, only about 65% of Ugandans have access to improved drinking water sources, and sanitation coverage remains below the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) targets. In Mityana and Kassanda districts, access to clean drinking water in schools is inadequate, leading to increased absenteeism due to waterborne diseases.
Project Implementation progress
Through funding contributions from friends in the UK, Mityana Charity, we are currently implementing two key initiatives:
These interventions are expected to benefit a total of 258 pupils in Nassanga and 260 in Nabukenya primary school.
Additionally, we conducted training sessions for children on proper sanitation and hygiene, ensuring that they understand the importance of handwashing, using clean drinking water, and maintaining personal hygiene to prevent illnesses.
The implementation of these facilities will significantly improve the health and well-being of school children by: Reducing waterborne disease cases in school, Enhancing student hydration, leading to better cognitive function and academic performance, decreasing absenteeism related to preventable illnesses, and Strengthening the overall education system by providing a safer and healthier learning environment. We thank our generous friends from the UK who funded us the projects in Nassanga Primary School and Nabukenya Primary school
