One third of the total population of Kolkata (4.5 million) lives in slums. Many children living in the slums and on the streets of Kolkata do not go to school. When they do, they often lack access to the necessary conditions - both material and social - to successfully start and continue their studies. They are mostly first generation learners and many are from single parent homes and many live in environments where alcohol, drugs, physical and sexual abuse are unfortunately common.
Our educational centres, provide not just remedial class support to the students to eliminate learning gaps, but other supports in the form of health care and nutritious and balanced diet; regular counseling, various therapy and involvement in extracurricular activities and vocational training. Above all a safe and sound environment where the slum children can sit and study. Calcutta Rescue acts as a guardian in the life of many handholding them till they are self sufficient.
