Community members in Nip, a Southern region of Haiti, have long suffered from low agricultural productivity. The soil is arid, yet working the land has always been difficult because they have lacked access to agricultural tools. Farmers plow crops by hand, which as you can imagine is both back-breaking and time-consuming work.
So, members of the grassroots organization The Society for the Agricultural Development of Nip (SADN) recently partnered with the Lambi Fund of Haiti to launch an ox-plow service. This service will provide farmers in the neighboring community (both members and non-members) with the ability to affordably contract the service of oxen to plow their fields. What would take days to plow by hand is now achieved in just an afternoon.
Lambi Fund field monitors have been working with SADN to launch the project. This has included setting up numerous training opportunities and workshops to teach members how to properly care for the oxen and how to plow the fields. Upcoming trainings on managing the ox-plow service are scheduled as well. In these workshops, members of SADN will learn how to maintain the bookkeeping, manage the service, schedule appointments and so on
As the project progresses, SADN is eager to begin plowing fields in their area which will hopefully lead to larger plots of land being cultivated and higher productivity.
