The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Region VIII implemented several government interventions for fishermen in Leyte displaced by the health crisis.
The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources was continually seeking and implementing interventions to facilitate the stable supply of fishery commodities. The BFAR Palompon office did a follow-up initiative to the 1-day on-site training seminar on Tilapia Culture and Management which was conducted last December 6, 2020 to empower and capacitate the previous trained participants to learn how to generate a sustainable food and supply of fishery commodities. Buenavista All-Lights Village Fisherfolks Association was one among the participants of the previous on-site training.
The BFAR Region VIII has started its technology demonstration in tilapia in tanks to be coupled with aquaponics.
Aquaponics is a relatively new discipline within the scientific community. It is the concept of combining aquaculture and hydroponics systems into one cohesive closed loop system that cycles nutrients and water to the mutual benefit of the plant and fish species within the system.
Tilapia grow well at high densities in the confinement of tanks when good water quality is maintained. This is accomplished by aeration and frequent or continuous water exchange to renew dissolved oxygen supplies and remove wastes. Recirculating systems filter and recycle the water.
As water and food scarcity became more widespread with climate change, aquaponics was one of the technologies that scientist began looking to as a potential for reduced water usage as compared to traditional farming methods.
