As the country faces the threat of COVID-19, several measures are being undertaken to ensure that most of the basic needs of the nation are supplied and every Filipino household is food sufficient while staying at home to prevent the spread of the disease.
The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) was continually seeking and implementing interventions to facilitate the stable supply of fishery commodities. One of the immediate responses provided by the Municipal BFAR in Palompon was the implementation of an Intensive Tilapia Culture in Ponds. Barangay Buenavista was identified as one among their beneficiary-barangay due to its location and some members of Buenavista All-Lights Village Fisherfolks Association were previously trained to be capable for intensive Tilapia farming in their very own backyard ponds. These ponds were a great source of income and food supply to these fisherfolks and other consumers in the local municipality.
Tilapia has been known to be one of the most basic and readily available fishery commodities in the municipality. Not only does it boast a flavorful taste and can be cooked into several delectable dishes, but it is also easy to produce. Intensive Tilapia culture hopes to revive the steady flow of fish supply in the market and provide a solution to the food security dilemma that we are urgently facing. Unlike the normal Tilapia farm production techniques, this technology offers numerous advantages, one of which is the improved growth of the species through the introduction of a life-support system in its environment. This method enhances the efficiency and productivity of the ponds, thus, bringing profitable returns to our fisherfolk farmers.
Other members in the Village also received a financial assistance of five thousand pesos (P5,000 or $100) from the national government’s Social Amelioration Program (SAP) while members of the 4Ps program of the Department of Social Welfare and Development continue to receive their monthly education and health assistance. The local government of Palompon is also helpful in providing constant food relief packages to the families in the community.
