Summary

This project will provide 35 teenagers (14 - 17 yrs old) with access to basic IT training and literacy, Math classes to continue in education and increase computer literacy. Rural schools in Gbawe village (Ghana) are overcrowded with up to 65 pupils per class and teachers struggle to help individual students. Computers and the Internet are a large part of our children's environment in Ghana, for jobs and social mobility. Classes will reduce gaps in ICT education in this rural community.

Challenge

Recently, the PAAJAF Foundation undertook a verbal survey of women and youth in the Gbawe community, there is 45% unemployment in Gbawe village. Many Gbawe rural schools are poorly constructed, classrooms are overcrowded with 65 pupils per class with little or no access to computers and IT. Jobs in the city are telecommunications and IT based. 35 impoverished teenagers have low IT literacy in Gbawe and to access jobs and further education need access to IT training, literacy and math support.

Solution

Our After School Program will meet the educational needs of 35 teenagers in rural Ghana (Gbawe) by: Focusing on children from homes experiencing difficult financial situations (single parent and no income), and those from the local school who have a low level of computer literacy; Tutoring by qualified teachers in Computing, English and Math using an online portal (Nkabom) to discuss homework assignments, media and creativity projects. Publishing an online magazine from their research.

Long-Term Impact

We will educate 35 teenagers (aged 14 - 17) on use of ICT and improve their grades with more focused tutor support. This will improve their literacy and IT levels and allow them to access health information, continue their education to accountancy and business colleges and achieve better paid jobs in the future. The long term impact is improved health and well being for themselves and their families.
