We extend our heartfelt appreciation for your generous donation to GlobalGiving’s Hurricane Otis Relief Fund. It has been over six months since Hurricane Otis wreaked havoc on Mexico’s local economy and infrastructure and displaced thousands from their homes.

Your donations have been a lifeline to communities picking up the pieces.Your support has facilitated initiatives in Acapulco and across Guerrero state, orchestrated by reputable, vetted nonprofits delivering food, emergency aid, and mental health support to those who need it most.

Here is a short description of some of the critical work you’ve supported:

  • Fondo Semillas is a feminist fund based in Mexico City that activated an emergency protocol in the wake of Hurricane Otis to mobilize economic resources. It employs a feminist perspective by activating their network of experienced women's organizations active in their own communities. This network has facilitated community diagnoses and the mapping of regional and national actors to address immediate crises and long-term vulnerabilities. The "Women Rebuilding Guerrero" program has enabled women-led groups to engage in crucial recovery activities such as cleanup operations and the distribution of essentials like food and medicine.
  • REMAR OCCIDENTE A.C., launched the Humanitarian Aid Response project dedicated to assisting those affected by the crisis in Acapulco, Guerrero. The project focuses on distributing food, medicine, and hygiene kits to alleviate the hardships faced by the community. They also sent a team of volunteers to prepare one thousand meals daily for families who were displaced from Hurricane Otis.
  • Techo Mexico is a youth-led nonprofit that works in informal settlements, or areas that have developed quickly and may have poorer housing safety, quality, or infrastructure. Techo Mexico brings communities and volunteers together to build houses for families in crisis.  Funding will go toward long-term rebuilding, which is crucial because recovery has been slow, and thousands of homes remain destroyed or in unlivable conditions.

  • Direct Relief has shipped more than 67 tons of medical aid to support local health services. They work closely with local health officials to manage and treat the outbreak. Efforts have been intensified to control the mosquito population through fumigation and leveraging favorable weather conditions. A field hospital near the Acapulco Convention Center has been set up to treat dengue fever patients, aiming to keep hospital stays under eight hours to manage capacity and effectively respond to ongoing health needs.

This fund is no longer accepting donations, and this will be the last fund report of this kind from our team. Thank you for your donation and solidarity, which enable GlobalGiving to be a trusted partner to local nonprofits in disaster-affected communities.

About GlobalGiving’s Disaster Response

When a disaster strikes, recovery efforts led by people who live and work in affected communities are often overlooked and underfunded. GlobalGiving is changing this reality. Since 2004, we've been shifting decision-making power to crises-affected communities through trust-based grantmaking and support.

We make it easy, quick, and safe to support people on the ground who understand needs in their communities better than anyone else.

They were there long before the news cameras arrived, and they’ll be there long after the cameras leave. They know how to make their communities more resilient to future disasters, and they’re already hard at work. GlobalGiving puts donations and grants directly into their hands. Because the status quo—which gives the vast majority of funding to a few large organizations—doesn’t make sense.
