Thank you for your generous donation to the Hurricane Otis Relief Fund! Donations to this GlobalGiving Fund are already making a difference, helping to provide immediate and long-term relief to affected communities in Mexico.

In our first round of emergency grants to our trusted partners on the ground, donations from the Hurricane Otis Relief Fund have already supported 2 grants to high-impact and community-led nonprofit organizations at the forefront of this crisis.

Here is what one team member at Cooperacion Comunitaria shared about the impact of the storm and their gratitude for your support:

“Overflowing rivers and strong winds destroyed corn fields, leaving entire families without a harvest. In the rural communities of the Coast and the Sierra, there will be no corn, bean, or pumpkin harvest. The basic diet of rural families was lost. This not only directly affects their alimentation, but also means the complete loss of their only source of income…

We are very encouraged to have such supportive friends. At these times, it is important to react quickly so that people can resolve their basic needs and dedicate themselves to a deeper reconstruction.”

Here is a short description of some of the critical work you’ve supported:

  • Cooperacion Comunitaria is a Guerrero-based GlobalGiving partner focused on disaster response and education. Their teams are on the ground in affected areas of Guerrero conducting assessments within their community on response needs, and anticipate an emergency response particularly focused on Indigenous and rural populations in Guerrero who were affected and are disproportionately vulnerable to disasters like these. They are leading a solidarity campaign to support communities in the restoration of soils and the recovery of agricultural lands affected by the storm.
  • Fondo Semillas is a Mexico City-based feminist fund that mobilizes resources and support to women's organizations and groups that provide aid and support gender equality in Mexico. They distribute emergency grants to grassroots organizations active in disaster response with a particular focus on the needs of vulnerable women and girls. Fondo Semillas is directly supporting grassroots, community-led organizations in Guerrero and surrounding areas affected by the storm to respond in their own communities.

Your support of the GlobalGiving Hurricane Otis Relief Fund powers community-led responses, and it means people in Acapulco and throughout affected regions of Guerrero get the critical resources they need to help their community rebuild. Keep your eyes peeled for further updates from this fund as our teams continue to launch support to our partners on the ground.

With gratitude,

Amelia + the GlobalGiving Team

About GlobalGiving’s Disaster Response

When a disaster strikes, recovery efforts led by people who live and work in affected communities are often overlooked and underfunded. GlobalGiving is changing this reality. Since 2004, we've been shifting decision-making power to crises-affected communities through trust-based grantmaking and support.

We make it easy, quick, and safe to support people on the ground who understand needs in their communities better than anyone else.

They were there long before the news cameras arrived, and they’ll be there long after the cameras leave. They know how to make their communities more resilient to future disasters, and they’re already hard at work. GlobalGiving puts donations and grants directly into their hands. Because the status quo—which gives the vast majority of funding to a few large organizations—doesn’t make sense.
