HRI has a dozen new education & prevention projects due to COVID-19 including food distributions, seed for farmers, mental health calls, production of detergents & disinfectants, production of face masks, income generation projects, production of hand washing stations, training of 100+ Good Health Ambassadors, prevention at 18 orphanages, distribution of books & games, and more. HRI is the lead agency in the OCHA mental health working group in Guatemala too, but much more needs to be done!
HRI works in Haiti and Guatemala in regions where there is very little to no clean water, no room to properly social distance, very little education on COVID, and where people depend on their daily labor jobs to put food on their tables. People in these conditions are not only most at risk of getting COVID, but they are also most at risk at spreading it and also dying from it. The people need education, sanitation, income generation and mental health care as we all walk through this pandemic.
HRI's COVID prevention and education programs all work together to provide education, sanitation, income generation and mental health care. But they also give people the education and resources they need to launch new businesses which will last long after COVID is under control.
HRI's projects train people with new skills that will last far beyond the current crisis. The trainings we provide for mask making, hand washing stations, detergent and disinfectant production and more are all things that will continue to be a source of income generation for the women we train. The seeds for farmers is a project that will ensure farming families have food for their tables and to sell for income over the next 6-12 months. Reading and clubs project for youth will continue as well.
