Half of Indonesian classrooms have no reading books available apart from textbooks. Without great reading books, children will not learn to read well. For more than ten years, our team has built working relationships with local governments, schools and charities, all of whom are desperate for good quality reading books.
One in every two Indonesian children finishes primary school unable to read and understand a simple text. Unless this changes, they will remain unable to take advantage of even basic education and economic opportunities. One key factor is that half of Indonesian classrooms have no reading books available apart from textbooks. Without great reading books, children will not learn to read, or come to love reading and learning.
This project will provide a "library in a box" to at least five schools in each of Indonesia's 34 provinces (170 schools in total). This 'box' contains more than 100 Indonesian books, supplied by various Indonesian publishers. The library in a box contains reading books at a variety of levels, so that each child will be able to find multiple books appropriate to their needs. The library box can be used in individual classrooms or by the entire school for years to come.
We believe that these 5 schools in each province, in addition to the ones we are already working with, can be catalysts for the rest of the schools in those provinces. The library in a box campaign will raise awareness and also inspire others to provide books to even the most remote places of this country. In this way, we are creating a self-sustaining program that will reach a greater proportion of each generation of children, giving them the opportunity to learn to read and to love reading!
