Challenge

Over 160,000 refugees from the Middle East, Africa, and Ukraine currently reside in Greece. They have left their home countries due to war, climate change disasters, ethnic/religious oppression, and poverty. They hold extremely high levels of trauma, with many experiencing deep anxiety, anger, depression, self-isolation, and the inability to retain resilience. Individuals, families, and entire communities are affected, potentially resulting in ongoing collective and intergenerational trauma.

Solution

Trauma is held in the body, dysregulating the nervous system and how the brain works. Without physical (somatic) intervention that re-regulates the system, people stay "stuck" in dysregulated traumatic patterns, often experiencing anxiety, insomnia, and depression. Therapies such as acupuncture, bodywork, and breathing exercises re-regulate the system. Alma offers holistic therapies and self-care education that help people begin to process and integrate trauma, feel better, and move forward.

Long-Term Impact

Trauma-informed holistic healthcare can help prevent and reduce acute, chronic, collective, and intergenerational trauma. The new Alma Community Holistic Therapies Center provides a place for refugees, migrating families, and essential workers that often have little access to trauma-informed care, to receive treatments, support, and education. Alma has provided thousands of treatments in the past eight years, and we estimate that we will provide services to at least 5,000 people annually.
