The 6.8M earthquake in Hokkaido in early September severely damaged the town of Hobetsu's only Learning Center for children. Damage was beyond repair and so the building will be demolished by the government. This project will purchase a Trailer House that will be used to provide a place for over 47 children to continue their extra-curricular learning programs, and activities to relieve post-traumatic stress following the earthquake.
The 6.8M earthquake that hit Hokkaido early September 2018 severely damaged the only extra-curricula Learning Center for children in the small town of Hobetsu, near the epicenter. As the damage was beyond repair, the building will soon be demolished by the government. There are no available buildings in the area to continue the learning center that had served 50% of the elementary children living in this small community of 3,000.
This project will set up a classroom style Trailer House on the property of the former building. In this way, the center can reopen its doors to the local children to continue to provide its Kumon style learning curriculum to help them advance in their educational development, as well as provide activities to facilitate relief from post-traumatic stress, following the extremely traumatic earthquake and subsequent three-day blackout.
With the implementation of this project, the town will regain its only Learning Center, which will provide educational and psychosocial development opportunities for scores of children in the community, not only in the aftermath of the disaster but for many years to come.
