The worst crisis in 150 years

By Giacomo Pizzi | Project Leader

Two years after the explosion in Beirut port, Lebanon is still experiencing a deep economical crisis, which some have defined as one of the worst economic crisis in the world in 150 years.

At the beginning of this month we commemorated the second anniversary of the Beirut port explosion on 4th of August 2020. Two years after the explosion there has been no reconstruction of the port and recently there have been new collapses of the port siloes that reflect the continuous collapse of the Country. The crisis in Lebanon is unprecedented: a political and institutional drama on the verge of collapse that has reduced the population to a situation of poverty with no escape.

Today in Lebanon there is no gasoline, there is no gas, there are no medicines and citizens get the same salary as in the period before the economic crisis, while the value of the currency has fallen dramatically and costs have risen.

Pro Terra Sancta has increased it's activities in the past year and thanks to the many contribution was able to open a medical center in Tripoli that is of paramount importance. Whatch Dr. Marianne interview and find out why: https://youtu.be/e9pRV6DVoPk

Our other activities in Lebanon:

1. Emergency Center in Gemmaize (Beirut)

  • 2,500 families reached by the distributions and aid of basic necessities, in Beirut, Tripoli, Tire and DeirMimas (tot of 9.200 persons).
  • 35 sheltered houses and 35 families who have returned to live safely in their homes.
  • 200 people helped with medicines and medical expenses coverage.

2. Pro Terra Sancta Assistance Center - Medical dispensary (Tripoli)

  • 250 people helped in the first month, including 70 children.

3. Franciscan Care Center Art Therapy - Psychological rehabilitation center for children and adults (Beirut)

  • 90 children and adolescents
  • 60 adults and seniors
  • 12 specialized local people involved (educators, teachers, psychologists, coaches, artists)

Since the requests for help at our emergency centers are drammatically increasing, we intend to increase activities in support of families in Beirut and other smaller cities of the Country. To do so we still need a lot of support!
