Gang violence is raging in the areas of Port-au-Prince and downtown Haiti. Residential neighborhoods enjoying relative peace are under attack from armed men who kill, burn and destroy almost everything in their path. Residents have been forced to flee their homes. They are gathering in improvised camps. Their hygiene conditions are worrying. They have no drinking water or water for everyday use. They lack almost everything they need: folding, covers and everything else they need to survive.
Gang violence has displaced hundreds of households that once lived peacefully in their own homes. According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), from January to October 2024, 702,973 people were internally displaced, including 170,225 households. 800 families giving 3200 displaced persons, newborns, the elderly and children. They are deprived of food, toiletries, drinking water and water for washing. They have settled on pieces of cardboard or on the ground without covers.
In the immediate term, they need a means of subsistence consisting of a hygiene kit and a food kit, which will be of great use to the emergency services. Subsequently, they will need other accessories for cleaning communal areas and means of disposing of waste generated on the sites. They will also need therapy sessions on trauma and attitudes. We will then discuss with them the possibility of moving to safer areas, either to other areas not attacked by armed gangs, or to a friend's home.
Supported displaced people will organize themselves in their new homes, far from gang violence. The routine of daily life is resumed, and they can return to the normal course of life.
