The year began with part 2 of the School holiday programme for students set specifically for the long Christmas break. With Schools closing earlier than usual, KMS was teeming with students. The programme is rich with students doing guitar, violin and piano as a basis, but capping that with art and craft, singing and African drums.
Claire has been in the mix with the children, but last week, she became a fully confirmed member of the administration team! Claire joined us in September last year in a different role but is now one of two Admin Assistants. She has shown great enthusiasm in learning all her tasks, assisting with setups for the various workshops, ensembles, and orchestras, and getting music and teaching material sorted out.
The Junior orchestra is one of those groups that Claire has helped set up, and rehearsals resumed on the 14th of January with leaders in training Rogers and Denis taking charge. Work began in earnest on an arrangement of the surprise Symphony by Haydn. If all goes well, the junior orchestra hopes to join in with the Youth Orchestra project that KMS is to take the technical lead. In this project, three primary schools will have 20 students each learn various instruments, culminating in forming a bigger orchestra.
The teachers in this programme are being trained in a training programme spearheaded by Mirian, who has been trained in the different elements of Kodály and Orff methods. The hope is to prepare the teachers to teach instruments in group situations they are unfamiliar with.
Exciting times all around, but we hope to aim higher and further with your support.
